The Pilgrim Monument commemorates the landing of the Mayflower Pilgrims in Provincetown on November 21, 1620. President Theodore Roosevelt laid the cornerstone in 1907, and President William Howard Taft dedicated the completed monument in 1910. There are spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean, Cape Cod Bay and, on clear days, Boston from the top of this 252 foot granite structure. The museum's permanent exhibits focus on Provincetown's rich history, including the arrival of the Mayflower Pilgrims, the town's maritime history, the early days of modern American theater in Provincetown, and the building of the monument. There are also toy exhibits, a whaling captain's quarters, and objects brought back from the Artic by native explorer Donald MacMillan. In addition, the museum mounts special exhibits annually. The 2007 special exhibit will highlight a "top one hundred" from the permanent collection and will also include a "treasure map” for visitors to find special selections shown throughout the museum. Visitors will fill in their own favorites that will complete the "One Hundred." In July and August, PMPM hosts historic walking tours of Provincetown on Tuesdays at 9 a.m. as well as free Children's Programs. Please refer to the PMPM website for more detailed information regarding these and additional upcoming events including book signings, talks and discussions on a variety of subjects. Individuals, with permission, may use the PMPM's archival materials for research purposes.
